This episode of the web series, Toward a More Perfect Union, is called “Is Money a Psychedelic Drug?”
Now you might say, that’s a ridiculous question.
But here’s the thing: money activates the same parts of the brain that psychedelic drugs do—it mobilizes the dopamine and serotonin receptors of the brain to light up, and then the brain sends these signals throughout the central nervous system. This then leads to an entire bodily sensation of pleasure. And the more you accumulate and/or spend, the greater that feeling of pleasure.
The thing about money is that it can be a source of obsession for some people, an obsession more related to materialism than the feeling of oneness that people often experience when taking psychedelics.
The pursuit of money can lead to behaviors such as greed, selfishness, and obsessiveness, which can damage personal and professional relationships. And the pursuit of money gets done all in the name of mobilizing the dopamine and serotonin receptors of the brain, to get that feeling of pleasure.
After you watch this short video, you may never see money in the same light again.
