This episode of the web series, Toward a More Perfect Union, is called American Hustle.
The emphasis in America is on individualism and self-reliance, so if you want to make it, you have to earn it. And for many, it’s believed hustle is the only way to do so.
While many developed nations around the world value hard work, hustle culture as seen in America is unique unto itself.
The competitive nature of the American economy, as well as the high cost of living, can create a sense of urgency and pressure to hustle and constantly strive for success. This can lead to a constant hustle in order to keep up or get ahead.
America was founded on hustle, and hustle has been ingrained in the American mindset since. Some work hard as their hustle, some use social media, some turn to crime, while others hustle through grift.
But then there’s a whole separate class of American Hustle, people who use trickle up economics–taking money out of the pockets of you and me and putting it in theirs–that takes hustle and grift to an entirely new level. These hustlers are known as “Masters of the Universe.”
It’s all about the hustle, because that’s the way of life in America—where you have to hustle to get and stay ahead.
And hey, if you’re interested, I got a bridge in Brooklyn I’m selling–it’s slightly used, so I’m willing to sell it at a discount. It’s a really nice bridge, so get in touch if you’re interested and we’ll work out a deal.
