Toward A More Perfect Union

What Woody Guthrie Can Teach Us Right Now

YouTube player

This episode of the web series “Toward a More Perfect Union” is about Woody Guthrie and what he can teach us right now. Through his words and through his songs, Woody advocated for workers, farmers, the downtrodden, and all those that have been through hard times. Ultimately, Woody believed that this land was made for you and me, that it wasn’t meant to be for just a select few, the ones with wealth.

In this video, you’ll hear a couple of Woody Guthrie songs: you’ll hear Woody sing “Pastures of Plenty”; you’ll see and hear Woody sing “John Henry”; and you’ll hear “This Land Is Your Land.”

You’ll also hear, in Woody’s own words, his observation that “people ain’t livin’ right, the human race ain’t been treatin’ each other right…”

Included in this episode is rare footage about The Great Depression and also about the Dust Bowl that swept Oklahoma, Texas and neighboring states in the 1930s.
